Terrapin Reopening On Thursday


After weeks of careful planning, Terrapin is excited to announce that we will be welcoming guests back to The Terrace this Thursday, June 4th.  Safely reopening a restaurant amidst the Covid-19 concerns is a challenging undertaking. The new reality of how we interact with each other has forced us to reassess all of our old policies and procedures and develop a new model of guest interaction.  We would like to share some of the changes you might see when you visit Terrapin.

  • Limited Terrace Seating Only - As Phase I of the Virginia Reopening Plan only permits 50% capacity outside seating, we will only be able to offer a limited number of tables on the Terrace each night. Tables will be spaced the required six feet from each other and we can only take care of parties of four or less. Except for access to rest rooms, the interior of the restaurant will remain closed to guests. Guest joining us for dinner will be asked to enter and leave through the Terrace entrance only.

  • Reservations Are Required And Must Be Made Over The Phone - For the immediate future, we will not be able to accept walk-in diners. Serving guests in-house during our new Covid-19 reality requires a level of planning and forethought that we could not maintain if we allowed walk-ins. In addition, reservations can only be made over the phone to ensure that we have the opportunity to speak with each one of our guests before they come to the restaurant. Dining with us will be a bit of a different experience and we want to make sure our guests know what to expect.

  • Masks Required For Guests - Pursuant to Gov. Northam's phase I mandate, masks will be required by all of our guests on The Terrace while away from your table. 

  • Guests' Temperatures Will Be Taken - In order to help maintain a safe dining environment, we will be taking each guest's temperature before they enter with a no-touch thermometer. If any member of the party has a fever, the entire party will not be able to dine with us.

  • Terrapin Staff Will Wear PPE - Our entire staff will be using appropriate personal protection equipment (PPE). 

  • Inclement Weather - In the case of particularly inclement weather, we might have to close The Terrace. We will do our best to inform you as soon as possible if we will not be able to accommodate your reservation. 

  • Two Hour Time Limit - A time limit is necessary to ensure a controlled flow of guests into and out of the restaurant. By creating these 'dining blocks' we can be certain that your table will be ready when you arrive and prevent a situation where we might have a number of different parties waiting, in close proximity, to be seated. 

  • Special Phase I Menu -  We will not be offering a la carte dining when we first reopen. Instead, we will feature a special three course prix-fixe dinner for $55 per person. Our three course dinner will offer guests a number of choices for each course including many of your favorites. 

  • A 20% Service Charge Will Be Added To Checks - All of the revenue will to go our kitchen and service staff

  • Limited Hours - To start, we will only be seating the Terrace from 5:00 p.m. - 7:45 p.m. In addition, we plan to only open the Terrace Thursday - Saturday each week and limit Tuesday and Wednesday to to-go orders only and remain closed on Sundays and Mondays. 

We will be back at curbside service next week Tuesday thru Saturday.

We take online reservations through Yelp reservations . Please note that we do not accept online reservations for parties larger than six or for outdoor dining on The Terrace.

  • Terrapin Date Night For Two -Turn your night in together into a cozy date night for two. Choose one starter, 2 entrees and we will select a bottle of red or white wine with our house-made sourdough & butter for only $60. See our Date Night menu on our website.       

  • Family style to-go dinners - Large pasta dishes and our whole chicken entree, suitable for 3-4 people, are now available every night of the week and include a complimentary large salad.

  • Retail wine - All of our wines are available for pickup at the restaurant at retail prices.

 

Please note that for all take-out orders we will be providing curbside pickup and we prefer to take payment over the phone. Any gratuities recieved will be used to help support our furloughed staff.

At Terrapin restaurant, we are  passionate about sourcing locally with sustainable farmers and area watermen. Chef Rodney has dealt with many of our local purveyors for over a decade turning business relationships into friendships. 

Purveyor Spotlight: Cromwell's Produce

The Cromwell’s family heritage dates back to the early 1900’s when John Giles Cromwell farmed the land around Wards Corner in Norfolk, VA. John & Betsy Cromwell have been carrying on the family tradition since 1983 on their 167 acre Virginia Beach farm. For almost a decade, the Cromwell’s have supplied Chef Rodney with a wide range of locally grown produce. Depending on the time of the year, our menu might feature their butter beans, zucchini, corn, tomatoes, baby beets, butternut squash and sweet potatoes.

TERRAPIN 2.0

Since opening, in April of 2006, Terrapin has been the standard bearer for fine dining in Virginia Beach. Over the course of the last 13 years, although Terrapin has evolved slightly with changing tastes and trends, the menu and the design of the restaurant  remained remarkably consistent.

 

In March of this year Terrapin closed for a week to re-invent itself. We re-modeled the interior, revamped the kitchen with the Josper oven and Dolly III pasta extruder and completely re-worked our dinner menu

THE NEW LOOK

Our remodeling included a re-design of the bar display, a new color scheme for the restaurant and all new artwork which pays homage to the inspiration for the name Terrapin. The remodeling  bring changes to everything from the floor to the ceiling giving Terrapin an exciting and fresh new look.

THE JOSPER OVEN

One of only a handful on the Eastern Seaboard, The Josper Oven is a charcoal burning enclosed grill with generous capacity that will allow larger, shareble dishes, such as whole chickens, and bone-in ribeyes for two.  In addition, the Josper can also be used to roast and grill vegetables allowing the natural wood charcoal to add an extra depth of flavor.

VERO BOTTLED WATER

We are proud to offer Vero Bottled Water to our guests. Using the latest in purification technology, the Vero Water system bottles our still and sparkling water in-house resulting in a nearly zero carbon footprint. And, it tastes great!
