Safely operating a restaurant amidst the Covid-19 concerns is a challenging undertaking. The new reality of how we interact with each other has forced us to reassess all of our old policies and procedures while developing a new model of guest interaction.  We would like to share some of the changes when you visit Terrapin.

  • Limited Dining Room & Terrace Seating

  • Reservations Are Strongly Recommended

  • Face Coverings For Unvaccinated People- If you are vaccinated you do not need a mask

  • Two Hour Time Limit - A time limit is necessary to ensure a controlled flow of guests into and out of the restaurant. By creating these 'dining blocks' we can be certain that your table will be ready when you arrive and prevent a situation where we might have a number of different parties waiting, in close proximity, to be seated. 

  • A 20% Service Charge / Gratuity Will Be Added To All Checks - For staff compensation

Beginning in 2006, we have been serving the finest quality food to the Virginia Beach Oceanfront. Our goal, from day one has been to make damn good food, with honest ingredients while being kind to those we meet along the way. 


We are proud to present our guests with a menu free of hydrogenated oils, and high fructose corn syrup, yet full of flavor that only the freshest ingredients from local sources can provide.

At Terrapin restaurant, we are very passionate about supporting sustainable organic farmers and local watermen, as well as preserving the integrity of our menu and products.

The Cromwell’s family heritage dates back to the early 1900’s when John Giles Cromwell farmed the land around Wards Corner in Norfolk, VA. John & Betsy Cromwell have been carrying on the family tradition since 1983 on their 167 acre Virginia Beach farm. For almost a decade, the Cromwell’s have supplied Chef Rodney with a wide range of locally grown produce. Depending on the time of the year, our menu might feature their butter beans, zucchini, corn, tomatoes, baby beets, butternut squash and sweet potatoes.

 A graduate of The Culinary Institute of America, Chef Rodney went on to perfect his skills at Le Cirque 2000 in New York and  Sky Hotel's hip 39 Degrees Lounge in Aspen, CO. He returned home to Virginia to open Terrapin in 2006. Since then he has wowed diners with a contemporary take on traditional regional cuisine based on his refreshingly simple philosophy - keep it local, fresh and sustainable.

Brian got his start in the hospitality business at the age of 15 as a busser in a small fine dining restaurant in Clearwater, Florida. Brian found a home at Eugen’s restaurant group, managing each of them over the course of his 15 plus years there. In 2008 Brian was lured to Virginia Beach to lead the front of the house at Terrapin. In his ten years as the General Manager he has redefined the standards of fine dining in Southeast Virginia. A certified Sommelier and consumate host, Brian has a genuine passion for hospitality.

Jordan learned his trade on the high seas as a cruise ship bartender. For over two decades, he tended bar on oceans (Atlantic &  Pacific) and on land (from Alaska to Nantucket) before joining us in early 2018. Jordan's greatest gift is not his refined palate nor his quick wit. It is his penchant for finding rare bourbons.

Since opening, in April of 2006, Terrapin has been the standard bearer for fine dining in Virginia Beach. Over the course of the last 13 years, although Terrapin has evolved slightly with changing tastes and trends, the menu and the design of the restaurant  remained remarkably consistent.


In March of this year Terrapin closed for a week to re-invent itself. We re-modeled the interior, revamped the kitchen with the Josper oven and Dolly III pasta extruder and completely re-worked our dinner menu


Our remodeling included a re-design of the bar display, a new color scheme for the restaurant and all new artwork which pays homage to the inspiration for the name Terrapin. The remodeling  bring changes to everything from the floor to the ceiling giving Terrapin an exciting and fresh new look.



One of only a handful on the Eastern Seaboard, The Josper Oven is a charcoal burning enclosed grill with generous capacity that will allow larger, shareble dishes, such as whole chickens, and bone-in ribeyes for two.  In addition, the Josper can also be used to roast and grill vegetables allowing the natural wood charcoal to add an extra depth of flavor.


We are proud to offer Vero Bottled Water to our guests. Using the latest in purification technology, the Vero Water system bottles our still and sparkling water in-house resulting in a nearly zero carbon footprint. And, it tastes great!
